Americans have not been known to take the easy road.

When it comes to civil rights, we tend to fight amongst ourselves, before coming to the original conclusion that equality is for all. Yesterday we battled over issues of race and gender, never learning the final lesson. Today we still battle ourselves, over who is equal and who is not, over sexuality, marriage, and who we can love. When it comes to the most important part of our constitution and our country, equality for all, we fail to lead the world as an example by demonstrating equality in our daily lives. We will still fight amongst ourselves, as the world changes ahead of us.

According to Paul Gauguierre, reporting blogger for the HRC, “France will soon be the 14th country in the world to allow gay and lesbian couples to legally marry. Today, the French National Assembly gave final approval to a bill that would extend marriage and adoption rights to same-sex couples. The bill, which passed by a vote of 331-225, passed the Senate two weeks ago."

France is the third country to pass marriage equality in the past two weeks. New Zealand passed a marriage equality law last week and Uruguay the week before. Here in the United States, marriage equality is the law of the land in nine states and the District of Columbia. That number is expected to rise in the coming weeks as state legislatures are dealing with the issue in Rhode Island, Delaware, Illinois, and Minnesota.”
